Malbec, is a purple grape that was commonly used in Bordeaux wines. Unlike Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec is more susceptible to frost and other problems so has fallen out of favor in the Bordeaux region, particularly after the 1950s. It is much more popular in Argentina, where the weather is warmer and more favorable for the grape.

Depending on where it is grown, Malbec can have different aromas. Malbec grown in South West France, in Cahors, has aromas such as tobacco, raisin and garlic, while Malbec in Argentina has a better texture and more fruity aromas. Other varieties are grown in Chile, Australia and California.
